MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WSPA) — Reactions from Palmetto State lawmakers are coming in after former President Donald Trump announced lawmaker J.D. Vance as his pick for Vice President of the US.
The news comes just two days after an assassination attempt against former President Trump was made, rocking the political sphere.
State officials are sharing their thoughts on pick for a vice presidential candidate.
Gov. Henry McMaster said on X that President Trump had an excellent and qualified group of people to pick a running mate.
“Senator J.D. Vance has represented the state of Ohio, our party and our conservative cause well and will help carry our momentum into November and beyond,” McMaster exclaimed.
In an interview with Amy Wood, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette called the announcement J.D. Vance a pick.
“J.D. Vance understands what’s happening in the homes of middle America,” Lt. Gov. Evette said. “He understands what happens when we have unfair trade practices and small towns get decimated and that leads an open door for drugs to come into small towns.”
Lt. Gov. Evette added that she believes that Vance will be a good asset in representing middle America in “this Biden economy that we’re all living in.”
Senator Lindsey Graham took to X to call J.D. Vance’s story “one of the most compelling stories in American politics, overcoming so much adversity in life.”
“He understands the struggles of working Americans, as he has walked in their shoes and has become one of their best champions. Bright, articulate, and a Marine veteran, he will serve President Trump well on the campaign trail. It is imperative we win this election to end the disastrous policies of the Biden Administration and Make America Great Again. J.D. is a hard worker with a beautiful family who will be a great spokesperson for the America First agenda. This is a clear choice for America.” — U.S. SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Former President Donald Trump announced who will run alongside him during the presidential election.
The presidential hopeful selected 39-year-old JD Vance, a first-term Republican senator for Ohio.
Following the announcement on Monday, many South Carolina leaders expressed their opinions on the republican vice president nominee.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham made the following statement on X, formerly known as “Twitter.” He said:
Governor Henry McMaster, a member of South Carolina’s delegation to the Republican National Convention (RNC) posted the following statement:
Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, a member of South Carolina’s delegation to the RNC said:
Trump named his running mate on his Truth Social network:
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond….”
During the RNC in Milwaukee, Trump was named as the official GOP presidential nominee.
Gov. McMaster represented South Carolina at the convention and announced all 50 votes for Trump.
According to the Associated Press, the Middletown, Ohio native made a name for himself after the publishing of his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.”
The news outlet reported that during Trump’s first presidential run in 2016, Vance was a “never Trump” Republican. However, in 2021, he reversed his opening and became a Trump supporter when elected in 2022.
Vance was selected as one of four politicians on the former president’s vice presidential shortlist. The other potential selections included Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and South Carolina’s very own Sen. Tim Scott.
On the other side, Democratic leaders have also released statements following Vance’s selection.
Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:
“This is the most consequential election of our lifetimes, and with Donald Trump’s decision today to add J.D. Vance to the Republican ticket, the stakes of this election just got even higher. J.D. Vance embodies MAGA – with an out-of-touch extreme agenda and plans to help Trump force his Project 2025 agenda on the American people. Vance has championed and enabled Trump’s worst policies for years – from a national abortion ban, to whitewashing January 6, to railing against Social Security and Medicare. Let’s be clear: A Trump-Vance ticket would undermine our democracy, our freedoms, and our future. There is so much on the line, and it’s more important than ever that we reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this November.”

Recovery Centers of America now offers outpatient services out of its newly expanded treatment facility in Greenville.
A ribbon cutting for the new 6,100-square-foot outpatient facility was held June 19. The facility is located at 47 Fisherman Lane.
“RCA plays a crucial role in healing those affected by substance use disorder in our community by providing essential support on their path to recovery,” said Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette during the ribbon cutting.
RCA at Greenville provides comprehensive addiction treatment services. Its new outpatient treatment services include two program options:
Through the partial hospitalization program, patients meet at the Greenville treatment facility five days a week for 6.5 hours each day. They receive group therapy, individual sessions, family therapy and medical interventions.
The intensive outpatient program has the same structured routine as the other outpatient program but doesn’t require attendance in a full-day program. Patients meet three times a week, morning or evening, for three hours each day.
“Our dedicated team of talented medical professionals is committed to delivering personalized treatment and support to every individual we serve,” said Lisa Goodnough, CEO of RCA at Greenville. “Together, we are making a profound difference in the lives of those seeking recovery and healing.”
RCA opened its Greenville center in September 2023 to help patients recover from addiction. The facility’s second tower recently opened in April, adding 28 additional inpatient beds.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette stopped in Myrtle Beach Tuesday morning to raise awareness for her new initiative, “Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders.”
“We want to get small businesses the help they need and we want to give kids the experience they need to be successful throughout their whole lives,” said Evette.
On May 1, Evette launched her new initiative in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. She said the idea started during her time as a small business owner.
“You know, we turn out amazing kids from college, a lot of them you’d be surprised, have never held a job,” she said. “And so they have a great 4-year degree. Sometimes they have a master’s. But they’ve never had work at all. Practical.”
She said it’s that first job where you develop essential skills, like communication, time management, and taking responsibility.
She said businesses like Myrtle Waves instill qualities in young folks like Valerie Martin, who has been with the park for five years.
“I’ve worked in admissions and I’ve been a lifeguard so I’ve kind of done it all,” said Martin. “Definitely customer service is the biggest one. Learning how to talk to people, how to communicate, how to do things on your feet fast. And then definitely with lifeguarding, life-saving skills.”
Evette said the ultimate goal is for these skills to translate into any career path a young person chooses.
According to Martin, her time at Myrtle Waves will help her achieve her future ambitions.
“I want to do something in the medical field, so I’ll definitely use all of my lifeguarding skills when I’m working,” she said.
Evette said the other large part of the initiative is a user-friendly job board, making it easy for businesses to post open positions, and comprehensive for young people to find jobs.
You can find that job board and all of the resources this initiative offers here.
